Following recent widespread layoffs at Microsoft, impacting approximately 9,000 individuals, including substantial reductions within Xbox, CEO Satya Nadella communicated with employees via a memo posted on the company`s blog. In this message, Nadella elucidated the reasoning behind the decision to cut so many jobs.
Nadella described these workforce reductions as “among the most difficult” choices the company has had to make. He extended his sincere appreciation to those who departed, acknowledging their contributions in shaping Microsoft`s current foundation.
The CEO also addressed the perceived inconsistency of these significant cuts occurring during a period of strong business performance. While asserting that Microsoft is “thriving” by all objective measures, Nadella attributed the layoffs to the “enigma of success,” suggesting that progress is not always linear but dynamic and demanding, offering new opportunities for leadership and impact.
Furthermore, Nadella revisited Bill Gates` founding vision of Microsoft as a “software factory” unconstrained by any single product. He stated that this concept is no longer sufficient, urging a “reimagining” of Microsoft`s core mission. The company is now heavily investing in Artificial Intelligence, committing $80 billion to develop and integrate AI into every product, including Xbox.
Nadella presented a compelling vision for AI, imagining a world where eight billion people could instantly access a researcher, analyst, or coding agent to achieve tasks, not just gather information. He also highlighted how AI could empower organizations to reach new levels of agility and innovation by transforming decision-making and streamlining operations.
Looking ahead, Nadella outlined three key strategic areas for Microsoft: security, quality, and “AI transformation.” For AI, the company plans to “reimagine every layer of the tech stack,” from infrastructure and app platforms to applications and AI agents. He stressed that Microsoft`s unique strength would come from its ability to integrate these layers to deliver comprehensive experiences and products, maintaining a platform company ethos that supports a broad ecosystem. The paramount goal for Microsoft, he stated, is to perfect both the product and platform for the emerging AI era.
Regarding internal organization, Nadella acknowledged that team structures are undergoing changes, which may lead to some disarray. He noted that “transformation always is” messy, with teams reorganizing, scopes expanding, and new opportunities emerging everywhere.
The cuts at Xbox involved not only layoffs and game cancellations but also the closure of at least one studio. Reports also indicated that developers at King, the Microsoft-owned studio behind Candy Crush, were potentially being replaced by the AI tools they helped create. Microsoft has previously acknowledged that the rise of AI could lead to short-term job losses but believes the long-term opportunities it presents far outweigh these challenges.
