Recent reports suggest that Microsoft embarked on an endeavor to develop a new game set within the beloved Fallout universe, notably without the direct participation of its primary custodian, Bethesda Game Studios.
According to insights from well-known industry insider Jeff Gerstmann, this ambitious project was being spearheaded by one of Xbox Game Studios’ internal teams. However, indications point towards the initiative failing to come to fruition.
Gerstmann did not divulge any specific details regarding the unannounced title but expressed his belief that the project would most likely never see a public release. He also offered his perspective on the future of remakes within the series:
“The Fallout project was being developed at a different Microsoft-owned studio, but as I understand it, it will most likely never see the light of day. As for remakes: it seems to me that [Bethesda] itself will not make them. I think they will be outsourced. For example, I believe the Fallout 3 remake will be entrusted to an external studio. However, I think that new games will continue to be developed by the same key people [from Bethesda], and they will likely still have fairly serious control over the franchise.”
In summary, while Microsoft’s internal experiments with the Fallout franchise appear to have been discontinued, the development of major new installments is expected to remain under the purview of Bethesda, with potential remakes being delegated to external development teams.
