MGM’s Sole Directive for 007 First Light: A New James Bond

007 First Light, the highly anticipated James Bond game from developer IO Interactive, marks Bond`s return to gaming after many years. Despite MGM`s typically protective stance over the Bond franchise, they issued only one specific request during the game`s production.

Jonathan Lacaille, IO Interactive`s franchise director, revealed to VGC that MGM`s single key directive was: “Don`t make him a killing machine.” Beyond this, the studio proved remarkably open to IO Interactive`s fresh interpretation of Bond.

Lacaille noted that MGM considered every concept proposed by the developers, with very few rejections. He described the collaboration as highly interactive, enriched by valuable feedback stemming from MGM`s extensive experience with the franchise. Lacaille called it a “fun ride” for all involved.

Previously, IO Interactive CEO Hakan Abrak hinted that 007 First Light might incorporate “live-service” elements, drawing inspiration from the Hitman series by introducing new missions for Bond after the game`s initial launch.

An example of this model was recently seen in Hitman: World of Assassination, where Mads Mikkelsen reprised his role as Le Chiffre from `Casino Royale.` In this `Elusive Target` mission, Agent 47 had the freedom to decide how to eliminate Le Chiffre while ensuring his own escape.

Notably, 007 First Light is a standalone title, unconnected to previous Bond iterations, and focuses on the iconic character`s origin story. IO Interactive plans to release the game for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2, and PC in 2026.
