Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls – A New Era of Tag Fighters

Arc System Works` highly anticipated fighting game, Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, introduces an innovative twist to the tag fighter genre by requiring players to literally assemble their team over the course of each match.

A recently released beginner`s guide video provided an in-depth look at the game`s core mechanics and systems. The video confirmed that matches, played in a best-of-three rounds format, do not commence with players having access to their full four-character team from the outset.

Instead, players begin each match with only two characters. The game features a dynamic stage transition mechanic: successfully executing a throw or landing specific special attacks in designated areas will trigger these transitions, bringing in a player`s third, and subsequently, fourth character. Allies can also join the team by knocking an opponent into a stage corner or after losing a round, offering multiple strategic avenues to expand your roster mid-fight.

Assembling your full team quickly appears to be a critical strategic objective. Doing so significantly increases a player`s maximum health and special gauge capacity, while also unlocking more versatile options for deploying assist attacks. The guide strongly advises players to prioritize rapid team assembly to “reach your team’s full potential.”

Beyond this unique team-building system, Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls incorporates many familiar elements of traditional tag fighters, including a range of special moves and character assists. The game will support both classic directional inputs for special moves and a more accessible single-button-plus-direction method. Notably, moves performed with precise directional inputs will yield a slight damage bonus.

The combat system features a tiered meter usage for EX moves, Super moves, and Ultimate moves, each consuming progressively more meter. Players can string together Ultimate moves across multiple characters to unleash devastating combo damage. Embracing a trend seen in many modern fighting games, mashing any main attack button will execute an auto-combo, known as a “Link Attack.” For mobility, players have access to double jumps, launch attacks, and air dashes, providing ample options for aerial combat and evasive maneuvers.

Each character also boasts a unique signature attack, activated by a dedicated unique attack button. For instance, Captain America can throw his iconic shield, Iron Man unleashes a barrage of repulsor blasts, and Ms. Marvel extends her arms to traverse the arena. Star-Lord can dynamically alter the element of his gun, Dr. Doom can summon an energy shield to block projectiles, and Storm can conjure powerful gusts of wind, each adding distinct strategic layers to their playstyle.

While the mechanics are extensive, players will soon have the opportunity to experience Arc System Works’ new fighter firsthand. Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls is set to debut as a playable title at this year’s Evo 2025 fighting game tournament. The game is slated for a 2026 release on both PlayStation 5 and PC platforms.
