Nintendo has unveiled a new installment in its beloved sports series, Mario Tennis Fever, set to launch exclusively on the highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2. The exciting announcement was made during a recent Nintendo Direct event, with the game scheduled for release on February 12, 2026.
The core innovation in Mario Tennis Fever centers around its distinctive “Fever rackets.” Each of these special rackets comes equipped with a unique Fever gauge. Once this gauge is fully charged, players can unleash a powerful “Fever shot,” capable of dramatic effects such as engulfing the court in fire or freezing it with ice. Another creative example highlighted is the Mini Mushroom racket, which can pepper the opponent`s side of the court with items designed to temporarily shrink them. Nintendo confirms that a total of 30 different Fever rackets will be available, each boasting its own unique ability and strategic advantage.
Fans will be pleased to know that Mario Tennis Fever will feature a record-breaking roster of 38 playable characters for the franchise. The lineup includes a wide array of familiar and fan-favorite heroes like Yoshi and Donkey Kong. While many beloved characters are returning, no entirely new characters were explicitly showcased in the game`s initial reveal trailer.
Adding depth to the gameplay experience, Mario Tennis Fever will include an immersive Adventure mode. In this whimsical storyline, Mario and his companions are transformed into adorable babies. Players will guide them through an enchanting overworld, engaging in various mini-games and challenging boss battles, all while helping them re-learn the fundamentals of tennis. Beyond the adventure, Nintendo has also detailed several other exciting modes, including Tournament, Trial Towers, Mix It Up, Online Room, and Online Ranked, ensuring a rich and varied gameplay experience for all players.
Looking back at the series` history, the most recent predecessor was Mario Tennis Aces, which debuted on the original Nintendo Switch in 2018. The venerable Mario Tennis franchise itself dates back to the year 2000, making its debut on the Nintendo 64 console.
