Mario Kart World Sales Soar, Nearly Matching Switch 2 Console Figures

The Switch 2 era has kicked off with an impressive performance from Mario Kart World. According to Nintendo`s Q1 financial results for the period ending June 30, the company sold 8.67 million game units. A significant portion of this, 5.63 million units, belongs to Mario Kart World, nearly equaling the number of Switch 2 consoles sold and indicating an exceptionally high attach rate.

It`s important to note that Nintendo launched the Switch 2 with a special bundle that included Mario Kart World. Considering the game`s suggested retail price of $80 – and Nintendo`s tendency to maintain prices on its popular evergreen titles – opting for the bundle offered a sensible financial saving of $30.

Despite its strong debut, Mario Kart World faces a long journey to surpass Nintendo`s all-time best-seller, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which boasts lifetime sales of 68.86 million units. However, these are still early days for the new Mario Kart installment. Significant competition is expected this year from titles like Drag X Drive, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, and Pokemon Legends: Z-A. It will be compelling to see if Mario Kart World can achieve the same enduring popularity as its predecessor. Furthermore, numerous third-party games are on the horizon, with a recent Nintendo Direct showcasing 25 titles set to arrive on the Switch 2 throughout this year and into 2026.

Overall, Nintendo`s business appears robust. Sales for the quarter ending June 30 reached approximately $3.8 billion, and operating profit saw a 4% increase, rising to $378 million. Nintendo continues to project sales of 15 million Switch 2 consoles by March 2026, even amidst the turbulent economic climate, including the sweeping tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump.
