LEGO Batman Arkham Asylum: A Grand Set That Doubles as an Advent Calendar

At the annual San Diego Comic-Con, LEGO unveiled its latest large-scale building set from the Batman universe, designed for adult collectors. The “Batman Arkham Asylum” set, comprising 2,953 pieces, is a detailed interpretation of Gotham City`s infamous psychiatric hospital, often home to many of Batman`s long-standing foes. This intricate Arkham model includes 16 minifigures and boasts a modular design that, according to LEGO, can function as a 24-day buildable Advent Calendar.

The “LEGO DC Batman Arkham Asylum” set is officially set to launch on September 9, priced at $300.

Although not officially categorized as an Advent Calendar, the set`s modular structure makes it an excellent fit for the daily build approach popular with holiday countdown calendars. Builders can assemble a section of the building each day for 24 days. Given the expansive collection of 16 Batman heroes and villains as minifigures, you`ll also discover a new character almost daily.

Included Minifigures

The full list of minifigures included with the “LEGO DC Batman Arkham Asylum” set features:

  • Batman
  • Robin
  • Batwoman
  • Catwoman
  • Batwing
  • The Joker
  • Harley Quinn
  • The Riddler
  • The Penguin
  • Bane
  • Mr. Freeze
  • Poison Ivy
  • Scarecrow
  • Killer Croc
  • Security Guard (x2)

It`s worth noting that standard LEGO Advent Calendars are significantly smaller; for instance, the 2025 editions typically retail for around $45. This makes the Arkham Asylum set a truly lavish option for a festive countdown.

Alternatively, you can, of course, bypass the Advent Calendar approach and build the entire set in a single weekend. The completed three-story asylum measures 10.23 x 9.84 x 12.59 inches. While this might seem compact for its piece count, it`s due to a dense packing of interior rooms. Moreover, unlike some LEGO sets that lack exterior walls on the sides and back, Arkham Asylum is a complete, enclosed structure.

Upon completion, the three floors can be separated, allowing for display and modification of the furnished rooms and holding cells. Sections on each floor are also designed for easy removal. Prison cell doors swing open with the press of a button, and villains can personalize their cells with 65 stickers inspired by Batman lore.

All minifigures come with transparent stands that can be attached to the building or front yard. These stands are designed to facilitate dynamic poses, as if capturing a moment from a movie.

The set also includes an Arkham Asylum inmate transport van. Promotional images show Harley Quinn operating the van, seemingly on the verge of successfully breaking the Joker out of the hospital.

Other Exciting LEGO Reveals at SDCC

Arkham Asylum is one of several exciting LEGO sets unveiled at SDCC. LEGO also announced its Game Boy building set, a 421-piece replica of the original Nintendo Game Boy. The LEGO Game Boy is set for release on October 1, coinciding with the newly announced Stranger Things BrickHeadz. This four-pack of buildable figures is only the second Stranger Things LEGO set (the first launched in 2019) and arrives just in time for the highly anticipated final season on Netflix. Additionally, on September 1, LEGO will expand its “Wicked” building set lineup with six new products, including display models for adults and play sets.

Overview of various LEGO DC Batman sets

The new Arkham Asylum display model joins an existing catalog of cool LEGO sets featuring the Caped Crusader, Gotham`s most notorious villains, various Batmobile iterations, and other iconic Gotham City landmarks.

Beyond Arkham Asylum, another Batman LEGO set is launching soon. To pass the time until September, you might consider acquiring the Batman Forever Batmobile. This 909-piece recreation of the unique design from the 1995 film launches on August 1 and is priced at $100. This is one of many Batman LEGO sets that focus on the Batmobile or his other stylish rides, such as the Bat-Pod from The Dark Knight Trilogy. Other notable sets include a Bat-Pod with a Batman Construction Figure and the retired Lego Technic: Batcycle from The Batman (2022).

While the Arkham Asylum set will be among the most elaborate Batman LEGO sets in the current lineup, it doesn`t boast the highest piece count. That distinction belongs to the “Batman: The Animated Series Gotham City” set, a large 3D wall art piece depicting the cityscape. It shares the same $300 price as Arkham Asylum but contains 4,210 pieces. However, the Arkham Asylum build is likely to be more dynamic, as 3D art pieces often have high piece counts due to numerous small bricks forming backgrounds.
