What`s next for God of War director Cory Barlog and Sony Santa Monica studio? According to reporter Jason Schreier, Barlog`s project is the studio`s “next big thing,” and its development “is going well.”
Practically nothing is known about the game itself. Although some speculated it was a new intellectual property (IP), Schreier refuted this. “It`s not a new IP, but it might feel like one. Perhaps that`s why people are confused,” he explained, adding that rumors of the project`s sci-fi nature are “nonsense.”
Schreier also mentioned that Resetera forum user Ashhong “knows what they are talking about.” This user previously stated that Barlog`s new game “is not a licensed game.”
Sony Santa Monica`s latest game was 2022`s God of War Ragnarok, where Barlog served as creative director after directing 2018`s God of War. The studio deliberately avoided a trilogy to prevent the Norse saga from dragging on too long.
After Ragnarok`s release, Barlog stated that Sony Santa Monica was “spread out on a lot of different things,” hinting at the possible existence of multiple projects under development. In 2021, it was reported that the studio was developing a new open-world sci-fi IP, but this project was reportedly canceled.
Currently, Sony Santa Monica is actively recruiting staff to work on a “new unannounced title,” although job descriptions provide very little information about the game itself.
