Larian Studios CEO Reflects On Two Years Of Baldur’s Gate 3 And Teases The Studio’s “Next Crazy Thing”

Two years have passed since the highly successful launch of Baldur`s Gate 3, a game that made a significant impact on the gaming world. Marking this milestone, Swen Vincke, CEO of Larian Studios, reflected on the journey so far and hinted at the acclaimed studio`s forthcoming projects.

In a celebratory X post regarding the game`s anniversary, Vincke commented on the rapid passage of time, stating how “life changing” the experience has been. He revealed that the immense success of Baldur`s Gate 3 is precisely what has enabled the studio to embark on their ambitious “next crazy thing”.

While refraining from revealing details about the next major title, which is still years from release, the developer assured fans that it would deliver “plenty of fun.”

“How that will unfold is uncertain, but I can promise we are working diligently to ensure you`ll have an abundance of fun – in a truly surprising manner. I am eager to unveil it, but patience will be key as we require time to perfect it. However, it will undoubtedly be worth the wait.”

Larian`s upcoming project, currently codenamed `Excalibur,` remains largely a mystery. However, the studio confirmed in January that it is now receiving their “full attention,” and it has also been stated that this new game will not be Baldur`s Gate 4.

Baldur`s Gate 3 spent nearly three years in early access before its official PC launch on August 3, 2023. Subsequent releases for PS5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S followed. The game garnered numerous accolades, most notably winning Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2023, alongside GameSpot`s own Game Of The Year award.

The latest update for Baldur`s Gate 3, Patch 8, brought significant additions, including 12 new subclasses, a photo mode, and cross-platform multiplayer. Despite the game`s immense popularity, Larian has unfortunately confirmed that they have no plans for future DLC.

In a prior interview with GameSpot, Vincke explained the studio`s philosophy: “Achieving player satisfaction and business success is crucial, but equally important is developer well-being.” He elaborated that their current direction significantly enhances developer morale. Despite the game`s massive success prompting calls for DLC, Vincke stated, “We had a huge hit, and people said `DLC this` and `DLC that,` and we said we`d make DLC, but then when we had a moment to think, we asked ourselves, `what are we doing?`” – implying a shift towards new, more fulfilling projects for the team.
