Kirby Air Riders: Sakurai’s Smash-Inspired Racing Evolution for Switch 2

Observing elite fighting game tournaments, such as those for Marvel vs. Capcom 2 or Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, often leaves me in a state of both admiration and confusion. The lightning-fast pace and frenetic energy unfold so rapidly that I grasp only a fraction of the action. Players who truly master such chaos seem almost superhuman. Kirby Air Riders evokes a similar feeling: a vibrant, fast-paced, and agile racing experience that can feel intense, yet remains thoroughly enjoyable.

During my hands-on session at Gamescom, initial tutorials introduced me to the game`s controls. Although automatic acceleration might imply a straightforward experience, mastering your vehicle demands considerable precision. Executing a perfect drift around a bend requires impeccable timing, and a clean landing after a jump—achieved by subtly adjusting your racer to match the terrain—grants a valuable speed boost. These core mechanics were easy to pick up during the demo, yet clearly offered enough depth to suggest a high skill ceiling for dedicated players.

This installment serves as a direct successor to Kirby`s Air Ride, with the `Air Riders` moniker signaling a notable evolution. A key focus is placed on individual characters and their distinct abilities, a design choice that strongly reflects Masahiro Sakurai`s extensive experience with the Smash Bros. franchise. The game appears to build upon that foundation, adapting the principle of balancing diverse power sets into an innovative racing environment.

Following the initial tutorial, I had the opportunity to play as two distinct characters: Magalor, known as the adversary from Kirby`s Return to Dreamland, and Starman, a familiar foe in the Kirby universe. While each rider exhibited subtle differences in handling, their unique special abilities were the most prominent distinction. Magalor`s special unleashes a potent beam behind him, ideal for striking trailing opponents. Starman`s ability, however, is entirely non-offensive; it allows him to ascend into the air using his standard spin attack while activated. This flight capability is primarily useful for reaching elevated areas, though it could also be deployed for evasive maneuvers at a slight cost to speed.

The demo primarily showcased the City Trials mode, structured into two distinct phases. The first involves navigating a sprawling open-world hub, collecting various power-ups and upgrading your initial vehicle. This phase introduces a strategic layer, as collected icons enhance attributes like defense, weight, and boost. Players can strategically use these to mitigate weaknesses or amplify existing strengths. After this initial phase, all accumulated power-ups are tallied, and these customized builds are carried into the second phase. It`s easy to envision competitive players, as they become more proficient, meticulously optimizing their chosen racers, air rides, and power-up collection strategies.
