Nintendo recently held a Nintendo Direct presentation dedicated to Kirby Air Riders, the upcoming title from Masahiro Sakurai, the acclaimed creator of Super Smash Bros. Prior to detailing Kirby`s new racing endeavor, Sakurai shared an intriguing insight from its development: he was concerned that the game might bear too much resemblance to Nintendo`s established racing series, Mario Kart.
Early in the presentation, Sakurai expressed this concern to Shinya Takahashi, Nintendo`s corporate president, and Satoshi Mitsuhara, then-president of HAL Laboratory, highlighting the perceived similarities between Air Riders and Mario Kart. He even quipped during the presentation, “Okay, so it is basically Mario Kart.”
Sakurai further elaborated, stating, “I even brought this up when I was first asked to make the game. I questioned if they still wanted to proceed, especially since, as fans of the original know, the true charm of the game doesn`t lie in the races themselves!”
The 45-minute in-depth presentation on Kirby Air Riders unveiled numerous details about the upcoming racing game. This included a look at the playable characters and vehicles, as well as Skyah, the floating island that will serve as the game`s setting. The presentation also elaborated on various game modes, such as the 16-player City Trial.
Kirby Air Riders is set to release exclusively on the Nintendo Switch 2 on November 20.
