Ahead of tomorrow`s “Mortal Kombat 2” movie trailer release, Karl Urban`s portrayal of Johnny Cage has already received his own promotional clip for a fictional action film titled “Uncaged Fury.” This trailer showcases the “Mortal Kombat” marketing team`s approach, presenting Johnny as a genuine action star. This significantly contrasts with Linden Ashby`s depiction of Cage in the 1995 movie, where his career was in decline, and he was seen as a joke, forced to appear in low-budget martial arts films.
In this pseudo-trailer, Urban`s Johnny engages armed men and even dodges a bazooka blast. “Mortal Kombat” co-creator Ed Boon even posted a fake “Uncaged Fury” poster earlier this week, setting the tone for their intentions. Imagine Chris Evans as Lucas Lee from “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World” or Ben Stiller as Tugg Speedman from “Tropic Thunder” – and you`ll grasp the overall vibe.
Johnny Cage from “Mortal Kombat,” a true martial arts expert, leveraged his talents to build a successful Hollywood career. Cage, serving as both an homage and a parody of Jean-Claude Van Damme, typically employs fists and kicks in combat while consistently maintaining his “badass” persona, sporting sunglasses and striving to look as cool as possible.
“Mortal Kombat 2” is set to premiere in theaters on October 24, 2025.
Meanwhile, some shifts are occurring in the video game sector of the “Mortal Kombat” franchise. Support for “Mortal Kombat 1” is nearing its conclusion following the release of its definitive edition, as developer NetherRealm has announced its need to focus on its next project. It remains to be seen whether this will be a new “Mortal Kombat” installment, an “Injustice” game, or something entirely different.
