In recent years, the landscape of DC Comics video games has been inconsistent, marked by a mix of canceled projects and titles that frequently fell short of expectations. While exceptions like the acclaimed Batman: Arkham series achieved significant success, the broader output often lacked a cohesive direction. James Gunn, co-head of DC Studios, is determined to rectify this as part of his ambitious 10-year strategic plan for the DC Universe.
Upon the relaunch of the DCU in 2023, Gunn emphasized a holistic, cross-platform storytelling approach, indicating that actors would portray their characters across various media, including video games. Although public updates on this initiative have been sparse, Gunn recently confirmed that “slight movement on different things” is indeed underway. This could imply a future where actors like David Corenswet, who portrays Superman in films, might also lend their voices to characters in other media, though Gunn refrained from revealing specific details.
Speaking to GamesRadar, Gunn shared, “We have a couple of little DC games coming out. But we also have talked about—and in early stages of planning—some bigger things. One thing in particular I’m excited about, but it does take time.”
Both James Gunn and Peter Safran are actively involved in shaping the future of DC`s gaming endeavors. Back in February, Safran outlined their efforts to steer the situation in a new direction, aiming to deliver “must-play” games to fans once again.
Safran elaborated on their collaborative approach: “James and I sit with literally the guys that run the studios…whether it’s NetherRealm or whether it’s Rocksteady, sit with them and talk about characters and stories that we’re interested in and that they’re interested in.”
Gunn previously acknowledged that any major game releases are “at least a couple of years away.” In the interim, it`s rumored that Rocksteady, renowned for the Arkham series, may be returning to its single-player Batman roots for its next project, as WB Games is reportedly consolidating its efforts and resources on its most prominent franchises.
