Is G Fuel Shutting Down, or Is It a Marketing Ploy?

A recent viral post from G Fuel, the popular gamer-branded energy drink mix, has ignited rumors across the internet that the long-established beverage company is facing closure. However, many observers are inclined to believe this move is a clever marketing strategy rather than an actual cessation of operations.

The cryptic message, prominently shared on G Fuel`s Twitter profile on September 2, stated:

After years of shaking things up, fueling the grind, and rewriting the rules, it’s the end of an era.

We’ve had the honor of being here through the late nights, the big wins, the impossible comebacks, and the unforgettable moments that made G Fuel more than just energy.

It’s been an incredible journey being able to build alongside creators, gamers, streamers, and a community that became family. Every tub cracked, every shaker raised, every memory made…we’ve felt the love every step of the way.

So to everyone who’s been a part of it thank you, we love you.

Logging out, G Fuel.

Despite the somber tone of the announcement, G Fuel’s official website remains fully functional, allowing customers to purchase products and even place preorders for upcoming releases. These include tie-in flavors such as a strawberry pomegranate for “Doom: The Dark Ages” and a Chun-Li blueberry white peach, both of which are yet to be released. When contacted, a G Fuel customer service representative cryptically advised, “Keep an eye out over the next 24 hours,” when asked about the company`s fate.

Staging a fake shutdown would not be an entirely surprising tactic for a brand so deeply intertwined with the gaming community and its dynamic personalities. G Fuel has a long history of collaborations, partnering with popular web series like Critical Role, renowned streamers including PewDiePie, various video games such as Rainbow Six Siege, Guilty Gear Strive, and Sonic, and even prominent V-Tubers like Ironmouse and Projekt Melody.

G Fuel was first introduced in 2012 by Gamma Labs, a company founded by Clifford Morgan. Initially, the caffeinated mix was sold as a water-soluble powder. Over time, its product line expanded significantly to include canned drinks, energy formula packs, plastic shaker cups, and other merchandise.

In 2015, Clifford Morgan, in an interview, promoted G Fuel as a natural alternative to conventional energy drinks like Red Bull and Monster. He criticized these competitors, stating, “I don’t think you can even compare the ingredients that are in G Fuel to the ingredients of some energy drinks. They’re so toxic. They have so many chemicals.”

However, G Fuel`s journey hasn`t been without its challenges. In April 2018, Gamma Labs faced a lawsuit from California’s Environmental Research Center. The lawsuit alleged lead contamination in G Fuel products and claimed the company failed to appropriately label them in accordance with California’s Proposition 65, which mandates warning labels for products containing certain chemicals. Gamma Labs reportedly settled the case.

G Fuel is also no stranger to controversy surrounding its personnel and public conduct. In 2019, CEO Clifford Morgan made a highly criticized comment on Twitter, disparaging a prominent female Twitch streamer in a reply to then-partner, controversial YouTuber Daniel “Keemstar.” While Keemstar`s partnership with G Fuel was terminated in 2020, with a spokesperson citing that his “behavior did not align with our values,” the brand continued to face scrutiny. More recently, in September 2022, G Fuel reportedly fired seven talent managers just a day after five of them lodged HR complaints against Morgan, alleging offensive language use during a meeting. A company spokesperson, however, attributed these terminations to “lack of performance.”

As the internet buzzes with theories, the next 24 hours are expected to reveal G Fuel`s true intentions and shed light on what this mysterious “logging out” message truly signifies for the brand and its community.
