Renowned composer Inon Zur recently shared his insights on his illustrious career, particularly focusing on his work for the science-fiction RPG, Starfield. Zur regards the Starfield soundtrack as one of his most cherished projects, placing it in the same league as his acclaimed compositions for titles such as Fallout 4, Rise of the Ronin, and Syberia.
During the development of Starfield’s musical landscape, Zur aimed to achieve a delicate balance between established “cosmic” auditory themes and the pioneering of a new musical vocabulary. He explained that his inspiration drew from the stark contrast of an immense, often serene cosmos, where countless rapid events—ships in motion, objects appearing and vanishing, and ever-shifting spatial dynamics—unfold simultaneously.
While acknowledging the inherent influence of legendary composers like John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, Vangelis, and Igor Stravinsky, Zur deliberately steered clear of direct imitation of existing space music icons. His primary objective, he emphasized, was to authentically convey the game’s intrinsic emotions and spirit. According to Zur, this dedication to encapsulating Starfield’s unique ideas and atmosphere is precisely what rendered the soundtrack both distinctive and resonant with listeners.
Despite the fact that Starfield has not yet garnered the universal critical and commercial acclaim of its predecessors, such as The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim or Fallout 4, the composer remains steadfast in his belief that public perception of the project will evolve over time. He posits that many players simply were not prepared for a game of its unique scope and nature at the moment of its initial release.
Zur also expressed profound admiration for Todd Howard, the director of Bethesda Game Studios, commending him as one of the most creative and inspirational figures within the gaming industry. The composer characterized Howard as possessing a vivid and clear vision, adeptly granting his team creative autonomy while simultaneously guiding their efforts towards his overarching conceptual framework.
Zur is convinced that this unwavering confidence in its foundational vision will ultimately enable Starfield to solidify its standing among legendary games. He suggests that such ambitious and innovative projects frequently require a certain period for audiences to fully comprehend and appreciate their profound ideas and concepts.
