MachineGames, the studio behind the highly anticipated adventure game Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, has offered fascinating insights into the distinct play patterns of players accessing the game through Xbox Game Pass.
In an interview with The Game Business, design director Jens Andersson elaborated on the studio`s ambition to make The Great Circle “the most accessible MachineGames game so far.” Its inclusion on Game Pass naturally lowers the barrier to entry, allowing any subscriber to easily try it out. However, data collected by MachineGames revealed an interesting trend: many Game Pass players would “jump in for five minutes and they drop out.”
Andersson acknowledged that while this data provides valuable feedback, the development team is cautious about making too many concessions. He strongly emphasized the core philosophy: “It needs to be a great game for the player who plays all the way through. That’s the most important part for us, being the story-centric studio as we are.”
He described striking this balance as “a hard balance” for The Great Circle. Andersson explained, “You always know that you should worry about that more, but at the same time, you care about the grand scheme of things.” This highlights the challenge of catering to both casual experimenters and dedicated fans seeking a deep narrative experience.
Release Schedule and Future Plans
The Great Circle is slated for release in December 2024 for Xbox Series X|S and PC. PlayStation 5 players can look forward to its arrival in April 2025. Additionally, a version for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 is planned for 2026, though a specific launch date has not yet been disclosed.
Looking ahead, the game`s first major expansion, “Order of Giants,” is scheduled to launch on September 4. While MachineGames has not announced any further upcoming projects beyond this, Lucasfilm has previously indicated its “super interesting” in exploring more Indiana Jones stories within the gaming landscape.
