Anticipation for the first open beta of Battlefield 6 is reaching its peak, with players massively connecting to servers even though they aren`t yet live. A key question on many minds is exactly how the skill-based matchmaking (SBMM) system will operate in online matches. According to EA, skill will be a factor, but it will not be the sole decisive one.
An EA representative informed CharlieIntel that Battlefield 6`s matchmaking will primarily depend on the player`s location, ping, server availability, and “some skill factor.” However, it`s important to note that these criteria may vary depending on the specific game mode and the current player count.
Earlier, Battlefield 6 producer Alexia Christofi emphasized that players primarily express a desire for features like persistent servers, a stronger sense of community, the ability to play together with friends, options to choose specific maps/modes, filters for ping/server fullness, and better support for low-population regions within server browsers. Christofi also confirmed that cross-play can be toggled on and off, and that console players and PC players will largely be kept separate unless lobbies require filling.
Based on the available information, MP1st speculates that in casual modes like “Conquest,” matchmaking priority might be given to “server fullness” to ensure quicker game starts. However, in ranked or competitive matches, skill will likely be a more significant factor than location. If this holds true, Battlefield 6`s matchmaking system will be similar to previous entries in the franchise. Nevertheless, until EA provides more definitive details, this remains mere speculation.
The first open beta for Battlefield 6 begins on August 7 for early access, becoming available to everyone on August 9. The game`s full release is scheduled for October 10 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Interestingly, “Barbie Horse Trails” also launches on the same day, prompting some GameSpot staff to jokingly dub the shared release date “Barbiefield.”
Several in-game images were also presented, showcasing key changes confirmed for launch, giving players a glimpse of what to expect.
