The acclaimed 2017 title, Hollow Knight, has recently achieved a new all-time record for concurrent players on Steam. This significant milestone was reached shortly after developer Team Cherry officially announced the release date for its highly anticipated sequel, Silksong.
On August 22, Hollow Knight saw a peak of 23,819 concurrent players on Valve`s platform. While raw concurrent player counts on Steam don`t always provide a complete picture of a game`s popularity, especially for single-player experiences that don`t inherently encourage simultaneous play, it`s undeniable that the much-awaited Silksong announcement has sparked a substantial increase in interest for the original Hollow Knight on Steam.
The previous record for Hollow Knight`s concurrent players on Steam stood at approximately 20,000, established in May 2022. All these statistical insights are provided by SteamDB, a reputable source for Steam data.
Beyond player numbers, Steam`s own sales figures reveal that Hollow Knight has climbed into the top 50 best-selling games across the entire platform. While the game is also widely available on console platforms, comparable sales or engagement data for those ecosystems are not publicly accessible. Notably, Hollow Knight is currently offered through Xbox Game Pass, and its sequel, Silksong, is also confirmed to be available on the service upon its launch.
The impending release of Silksong, which is set for September 4, has already caused ripples in the gaming industry, leading to the delay of at least three other titles. The wait for this sequel has been exceptionally long for fans worldwide.
Following a hands-on session with Silksong at this week`s Gamescom event, Steve Watts of GameSpot offered his insights, stating: “Hollow Knight: Silksong appears to be exactly what we all should have expected: a strong, well-designed, visually lovely game that carries forward the aesthetic and design philosophies of the original with thoughtful, if not earth-shattering, updates.”
