The anticipation for Hollow Knight: Silksong has arguably overshadowed the game itself in public awareness. Its title has become linked to numerous jokes and memes, as enthusiastic fans and media scrutinize every event for potential news, footage, or a release date from Team Cherry.
With its release imminent, the intense focus on Silksong`s absence might distract from appreciating the actual game, which appears to be a strong follow-up, maintaining the core essence of its highly praised predecessor.
My hands-on experience with Hollow Knight: Silksong was brief, lasting approximately 10 minutes. This short demo allowed me to complete only the initial area after a brief cutscene. It seemed to be the same demo showcased in 2019, though I cannot comment on any deeper technical changes since then. The introductory cutscene, establishing Hornet`s role, possessed a familiar moody, poetic, and haunting atmosphere for fans of the original. Notably, its color scheme was more subdued than the vibrant demo gameplay, which was a pleasant artistic contrast.
The gameplay environment, however, was vividly dynamic, bursting with color and visual effects. While the original Hollow Knight was visually strong, it had a distinct, often darker aesthetic with limited foreground visibility. Silksong, conversely, is remarkably vibrant. The initial lush area was teeming with green foliage, and the subsequent, even more striking zone, featured delicate glowing elements and warm orange and red tones, creating a lively ambiance. Though retaining the original`s artistic lineage, Silksong showcases significant visual evolution since 2017.
Despite the demo`s brevity, the combat system felt like a logical progression for the series. Hornet exhibits increased speed, and her downward strike, a quick diagonal slash, enhances her agility. While the initial stage wasn`t overly challenging, I did encounter a death against a boss due to an overly aggressive attack. Such a significant consequence for a minor error is rare early in a game, yet it suggests Team Cherry understands its audience: Hollow Knight veterans seeking a fresh challenge will find a brief adjustment period but will appreciate a game that doesn`t hold back after a quick re-familiarization.
Thus, Hollow Knight: Silksong seemingly delivers precisely what was anticipated: a robust, beautifully crafted game that faithfully extends the original`s artistic and design principles with refined, though not revolutionary, enhancements. The lengthy wait for Silksong is nearing its end, allowing us to shift focus from its delayed arrival to the game`s intrinsic qualities.
Team Cherry has yet to announce an exact release date for Hollow Knight: Silksong. However, the Gamescom Opening Night Live event affirmed its projected 2025 launch. A significant announcement, potentially including the release date, is scheduled for Thursday, August 21st.
