HBO’s The Last of Us Lands Emmy for Its Most Impactful Episode’s Sound

The critically acclaimed HBO series “The Last of Us” has once again been recognized by the Television Academy, taking home an Emmy Award for Outstanding Sound Editing for a Comedy or Drama Series. This significant win was specifically for the episode titled “Through the Valley,” which stands as the second and arguably most emotionally harrowing installment of the show`s second season.

This year, the series amassed an impressive 16 total nominations, showcasing its excellence across a broad spectrum of technical and creative disciplines. These nominations included categories such as Best Production Design, Casting, Picture Editing, Contemporary Makeup, Prosthetic Makeup, Music Supervision, Sound Mixing, and Special Visual Effects. Furthermore, a documentary offering a behind-the-scenes look at the production also secured a nomination in the Nonfiction Short category.

The talented cast received substantial acclaim, with Pedro Pascal, who portrays Joel, and Bella Ramsey, as Ellie, both earning nominations for Best Actor and Best Actress, respectively. Several supporting actors also garnered recognition, including Kaitlyn Dever (Abby), Catherine O`Hara (Gail), Jeffrey Wright (Isaac), and Joe Pantoliano (Eugene). The series itself continued its strong performance by receiving a nomination for Best Drama for the second consecutive year.

Despite these numerous accolades, some fans voiced their disappointment regarding the absence of nominations for writing and directing. There was also notable fan sentiment that Isabela Merced`s compelling performance as Dina was unjustly overlooked. Nevertheless, Neil Druckmann, co-president of Naughty Dog, expressed profound gratitude to the Television Academy. He remarked, “To see the story of The Last of Us Part II celebrated and find new life and new fans has been a thrill for our studio,” highlighting the studio`s joy in the story`s reception.

As anticipation builds for the confirmed third season, which is expected to center on Abby`s compelling narrative, an official release date remains to be announced. The first season of “The Last of Us” previously garnered eight Emmys from its 24 nominations, including an award for Outstanding Guest Actor for Nick Offerman. In the current awards cycle, other prominent HBO productions like “The Penguin” and “The White Lotus,” alongside Apple`s “Severance,” led the overall nomination count.
