Grave of the Fireflies Blu-Ray: New Studio Ghibli Steelbook Edition Available

Studio Ghibli enthusiasts can now acquire the recently reissued film “Grave of the Fireflies” at a favorable price. As with other Ghibli animated features, Shout Factory handled the release of the new Limited Edition Steelbook and standard Blu-ray, both launched on July 8.

“Grave of the Fireflies” is among several Studio Ghibli films offered in a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack featuring a collectible steel case. Many Studio Ghibli Steelbook editions are currently available at discounted prices.

The Limited Edition Steelbook of “Grave of the Fireflies” includes both 1080p Blu-ray and DVD versions of the movie. Bonus features comprise an in-depth look at storyboards, several deleted scenes (produced only as storyboards), image galleries, a collection of trailers, an interview with director Isao Takahata, and an interview with the late film critic Roger Ebert.

Unlike many Ghibli productions, the 1989 film, directed by Isao Takahata, is not exactly suitable for all family members. Rated PG-13 due to depictions of blood and gore, this somber journey is set during the final days of World War II in Japan.

The standard edition, housed in a plastic case with a cardboard sleeve, offers the identical content as the Steelbook version, differing only in its packaging.

While Studio Ghibli films typically explore fantasy themes and often incorporate environmental messages, “Grave of the Fireflies” stands as a rare exception. It is based on the personal accounts of Akiyuki Nosaka, a survivor of World War II. The film centers on 14-year-old Seita and his four-year-old sister Setsuko, war orphans striving to survive in the Japanese countryside amidst food shortages, abusive relatives, and Allied bombing raids.

The film doesn`t shy away from its challenging subject matter, yet it remains an enduring animated classic with a powerful core message and fleeting moments of joy woven into its bleak narrative. Be prepared for an emotional experience when watching this movie.

The case design for “Grave of the Fireflies” more closely resembles last year`s “The Boy and the Heron” Steelbook release than earlier entries in the Studio Ghibli Steelbook series. “Grave of the Fireflies” previously saw a Blu-ray release in 2012 and also received a steelbook with the older, single-color background aesthetic. However, prior Blu-ray releases of the film have been out of print for many years.
