God of War TV Series: What to Expect from the Live-Action Adaptation

The Amazon TV series based on God of War, a revered PlayStation franchise, is progressing after years in development. This live-action adaptation will not simply recreate the games but aims to select key elements and reinterpret them to forge a distinct new narrative, a common approach for video game adaptations.

During San Diego Comic-Con, showrunner Ronald D. Moore confirmed that the 2018 God of War game by Sony Santa Monica is the main source of inspiration. He told Collider that adapting this “rich and interesting world” has been enjoyable. Moore emphasized that the series will be an “adaptation-slash-interpretation” for live-action, aiming to retain the core story, characters, and overall spirit while exploring the extensive lore for creative ideas.

Moore further noted the active involvement of God of War game director Cory Barlog, praising his “encyclopedic knowledge” of the franchise. Moore, who typically retains a full season`s plot in his mind, admitted that Barlog`s grasp of the mythology, character connections, puzzles, and artifacts is “truly impressive.”

The God of War series is part of a growing slate of video game adaptations at Amazon, with potential for multiple seasons. Other projects include a confirmed second season of Fallout, an early-stage Wolfenstein adaptation, and ongoing work on Mass Effect and Warhammer 40K TV series. The most recent installment in the God of War game series was 2022`s God of War Ragnarök, which concluded Kratos`s Norse saga.

Meanwhile, Sony Santa Monica, the game developer, is reportedly developing a new major project, possibly reimagining another established intellectual property, akin to their approach with the 2018 God of War game.
