Sucker Punch`s highly anticipated new title, Ghost of Yotei, is set to continue the distinguished legacy of Ghost of Tsushima. Nate Fox and Jason Connell, the directors behind both acclaimed games, have unveiled their strategy to ensure Ghost of Yotei`s expansive open world avoids the common pitfall of overwhelming players with too many objectives.
During a recent discussion with VGC, Fox and Connell emphasized that Ghost of Yotei will intentionally feature minimal explicit guidance regarding player progression. Instead, the game is designed to empower players to forge their own unique path through its world.
Fox passionately described what he and Jason cherish most: “That moment when you`re on your horse and you`re looking at this big, beautiful landscape… And maybe the wind is telling you, if you would like to continue the story, go that way. But you see something out of the corner of your eye that catches your curiosity. And you say, `you know what? I`m going to go check that out.` That moment where the game`s not telling you really about where to go or what to do. It`s you. That`s the most beautiful thing about open-world games.”
Connell further elaborated on their development challenge: “We have this approachable, samurai cinema-inspired game, and so the trick for us as developers is to create a game that provides that extra level of creative freedom we strive for. Allowing players to enjoy it, while at the same time, we`re never going to abandon the structure of the story.”
Sucker Punch previously announced that Ghost of Yotei will deeply honor classic samurai films, notably bringing back the beloved Kurosawa mode, which draws inspiration from the legendary director Akira Kurosawa`s cinematic works. Connell and Fox also engaged in a broader conversation, discussing with GameSpot how they intend to meticulously balance the new elements introduced in Ghost of Yotei with the familiar and cherished aspects from its predecessor, Ghost of Tsushima.
Ghost of Yotei is officially scheduled to launch on PlayStation 5 on October 2nd. Its release will be accompanied by a series of limited-edition Ghost of Yotei PS5 console bundles for fans.
