Sucker Punch has confirmed the return of the popular black-and-white Kurosawa mode in the upcoming sequel, Ghost of Yotei. This mode, first introduced in 2020`s Ghost of Tsushima following a partnership with the estate of late Samurai film director Akira Kurosawa, was a highlight of a recent State of Play presentation for the new game. But the Kurosawa mode isn`t the only feature in Ghost of Yotei inspired by classic Samurai cinema.
Towards the conclusion of the gameplay deep dive video, the developers revealed a new collaboration with Takashi Miike, the director behind films like `13 Assassins`. This partnership has resulted in an additional game mode designed to offer a more intimate and visceral view of combat encounters, characterized by increased mud and blood splatter for a raw, intense experience.
A third unique mode is the result of a collaboration with Shinichirō Watanabe, director of the acclaimed anime `Samurai Champloo`. The development team noted that Watanabe directly supervised his mode`s implementation in the game, contributing original lo-fi music tracks to Ghost of Yotei`s soundtrack.
Among the significant new details shared during the State of Play was information about Ghost of Yotei`s protagonist, Atsu. Unlike the previous game`s focus on Samurai or shinobi styles, Atsu is not limited in her weaponry and can wield a diverse arsenal. Atsu can also form alliances with various non-player characters, including a wolf companion.
Sony also took the opportunity to announce two limited-edition PlayStation 5 bundles featuring Ghost of Yotei branding. These special console bundles are scheduled for release alongside the game itself on October 2nd.
