Ghost of Yōtei: Atsu Becomes a Versatile Weapon Specialist, Shifting Combat from Tsushima

The latest State of Play presentation showcased significant changes to combat in Ghost of Yōtei. Unlike Ghost of Tsushima`s protagonist Jin, the new character, Atsu, is equipped with a much broader selection of weapons and gadgets.

Described in the State of Play gameplay deep dive as a “lone wolf mercenary” rather than a samurai or ninja, Atsu`s fighting style reflects this identity. Jin primarily relied on a few weapons for set duels or stealthy assassinations. In contrast, Atsu can jump into open combat wielding a variety of close-range weapons like a katana, spear, kusarigama, ōdachi, and dual swords, alongside ranged tools including a half bow, longbow, teppo (hand cannon), kunai, bombs, and blinding powder.

The gameplay demonstrated a weapon countering system, reminiscent of rock-paper-scissors, where specific weapons are highly effective against particular enemy types. For example, the ōdachi is noted as being particularly useful against large adversaries, while dual swords excel against spear-wielders. Ghost of Tsushima featured a similar strategic layer, but it revolved around Jin changing his **stances** with his katana rather than switching between multiple weapon types.

It is not yet definitively known if Yōtei`s new weapon system entirely replaces Tsushima`s stance mechanic, but given their seemingly similar gameplay roles, it appears probable.

Beyond her extensive arsenal, Atsu can also disarm enemies and potentially team up with other characters. One notable ally mentioned is a mysterious wolf who accompanies her on her quest for vengeance. The extent to which bringing allies along impacts gameplay was not heavily detailed in the showcase.

Future presentations will likely provide more insight into Atsu`s stealth capabilities and tools, as well as how allied gameplay functions. However, the full game is set to release relatively soon. Ghost of Yōtei is scheduled to launch for PlayStation 5 on October 2nd.
