GameSir G8 Plus Controller: A Great Alternative for Nintendo Switch 2 & Mobile On Sale

The GameSir G8 Plus Galileo Bluetooth Controller, designed for handheld gaming on iOS, Android, and Nintendo Switch consoles, is currently available at a significant discount during sales events like Walmart Deals and Amazon Prime Day. Usually priced at $80, the G8 Plus can be purchased for just $50 at Walmart and $64 at Amazon. A particularly noteworthy aspect of the G8 Plus is its compatibility with the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, making it a viable alternative to the standard Joy-Con 2 controllers for handheld play.

Beyond Switch 2 compatibility, the G8 Plus offers several features that make it an appealing choice for users of the new console, including enhanced ergonomics, programmable back buttons, Hall Effect analog sticks (known for preventing drift), interchangeable components, and a traditional D-pad. For Marvel enthusiasts, there are also officially licensed versions featuring designs based on Hulk or Thanos, perfect for gaming on the go with your Switch 2.

Similar to other mobile controllers like the Backbone Pro and Razer Kishi V3 Pro, the G8 Plus features an expandable mount capable of holding your smartphone, tablet, or Nintendo console. With support for devices up to 8.5 inches, its versatility is impressive. In addition to the Switch 2, it works seamlessly with the Switch OLED and the original Switch. You can also connect various devices such as iPhones, Android phones, iPad Mini, and a wide range of small Android tablets.

GameSir G8 Plus Galileo Controller Features

Here`s a quick overview of the main features found in the G8 Plus Galileo, which are consistent across the standard black edition and the two licensed Marvel versions:

Key Specifications:

  • Compatible Platforms: Switch 2, Switch, iOS, Android

The standard black version of the G8 Plus has a similar black finish to the Switch 2 console. The $50 offer is available through the manufacturer shipping from Walmart. If Walmart runs out, Amazon offers the G8 Plus for $64. While GameSir`s site briefly increased the MSRP from $80 to $100 in June, the original $80 price has returned for this specific edition.

Marvel fans can also explore the themed models based on The Hulk and Thanos.

Incredible Hulk Edition

The officially licensed Incredible Hulk Edition is currently reduced to $70 (down from $100) at Walmart. This version is sold by GameSir and dispatched from Walmart.

The Hulk Edition features a vibrant green color scheme highlighted by purple artwork. Its design is relatively subtle compared to many themed controllers, as the artwork is integrated to complement the base colors.

All five included stick caps and the D-pad match the darker green found on the controller`s rear. The face buttons are purple (A and B) and green (X and Y). Hulk`s name is outlined in purple on the back, accompanied by an image of his fist.

Thanos Edition

For those who prefer the Mad Titan, the Thanos Edition is also officially licensed by Marvel and available for $80 (reduced from $100) at Walmart. Like the Hulk model, it ships from Walmart and is sold by GameSir.

The Thanos Edition sports a gold and purple color combination. The front features glossy gold artwork accents, while the back is purple with “Thanos” written in large block letters across the center.

The face buttons alternate between purple and gold (two of each), and the D-pad and triggers match the glossy gold accents. It comes with one purple stick cap and four gold stick caps.

The GameSir G8 Plus Galileo is available in standard and Marvel-themed editions.

The G8 Plus is equipped with Hall Effect analog sticks, which provide a smooth and precise feel. These sensors are known for being `anti-drift`, suggesting they will maintain performance over time. In contrast, the Joy-Con 2 Controllers use ALPS sticks, and some users have already reported experiencing drift issues.

As previously mentioned, several other features make this controller a compelling choice for Switch 2 users. It includes a pair of remappable back buttons, one on each side, and a classic directional pad. The back buttons can be configured directly on the controller or through the GameSir mobile application.

The controller also incorporates a 6-axis gyroscope for motion controls and rumble motors on each side for haptic feedback. With a design closer to traditional controllers, the G8 Plus offers better ergonomics compared to the Joy-Con 2.

The layout of the face buttons mirrors that of an Xbox controller, meaning the A/B and X/Y button labels are swapped relative to the standard Nintendo layout. By default, Nintendo consoles will respond according to the button`s *physical label*, which might be confusing for some players. However, there are two ways to address this. The G8 Plus allows for hot-swapping face buttons and sticks; users can remove the faceplate, pop off the button caps, and rearrange them. If you prefer not to physically swap buttons every time you switch between mobile and Switch 2, you can activate `Switch mode` by holding the program button (M) and A simultaneously. In this mode, the controller signals the Switch that A/B and X/Y inputs should be registered as their opposites.

GameSir G8 Plus with Nintendo Switch 2
The GameSir G8 Plus offers a more ergonomic grip for the Switch 2.

Included in the box are three alternative stick caps to replace the preinstalled traditional ones. These include a domed cap, a taller stick suitable for FPS games, and a shorter stick with a smaller cap. For FPS gaming, you can also enable a `hair trigger` mode, which reduces the distance needed to actuate the left and right triggers.

There are a couple of potential considerations when using the G8 Plus with the Switch 2. Although the grip securely holds the Switch 2 in place with a rubberized bridge and pads to help prevent scratches, it doesn`t physically attach to the console like Joy-Con controllers. When carrying the console, it`s advisable to hold the Switch 2 itself rather than just the controller`s grip. Due to the Switch 2`s dimensions, its top and bottom edges extend beyond the controller`s grips, leaving them exposed. You might consider adding a protective case to your Switch 2 when using this controller. Additionally, you will need to detach the Switch 2 from the controller`s cradle to place it in its dock.

The G8 Plus`s versatility is a major advantage. It`s highly probable that various handheld controllers specifically designed for the Switch 2 will appear, but most are unlikely to be compatible with other devices. Therefore, even if you choose a different controller or an ergonomic grip for your Switch 2 later, the G8 Plus won`t become obsolete. You can still use it as a wireless controller with your Switch 2 (or original Switch) when playing on a TV.
