Gabe Newell: Diving, Working, and Redefining Retirement

What does a typical day look like for Gabe Newell, the billionaire co-founder of Valve and a towering figure in the gaming industry? In a recent interview with Zalkar Saliev, conducted from the comfort of one of his yachts, Newell offered a glimpse into his unique daily rhythm, which seamlessly combines personal leisure with a demanding work schedule.

Newell described a routine that involves waking up and working, followed by a scuba dive. He then dedicates more time to work, often concluding with either a second scuba dive or a session at the gym. His life on a boat allows him to engage with those around him before returning to his professional duties. “I work seven days a week,” Newell revealed, noting he frequently operates from his bedroom. “I enjoy working; it’s fun. For me, it doesn`t feel like work. The activities I get to pursue every day are truly amazing.” Valve has since confirmed the authenticity of this interview, adding weight to Newell’s unconventional work-life balance.

Newell holds a distinct perspective on the concept of retirement. He posits that the traditional notion of retirement involves escaping an “unpleasant job” to finally pursue enjoyable and fulfilling activities. By this definition, he considers himself to have been “retired” for a considerable period, as his professional endeavors are inherently aligned with his passions.

Beyond his extensive commitments at Valve, Newell is also a notable innovator in other fields. He established Starfish Neuroscience, a company specializing in neural interfaces, positioning it as a competitor to Elon Musk`s Neuralink. Additionally, he is actively involved with a company dedicated to developing an advanced “aerosol pathogen detection device,” designed to identify airborne disease-causing agents.

“I simply work constantly,” he elaborated. “But it`s not a struggle, like `Oh my god, I`m toiling away late at night.` It’s more like, `I can`t go to sleep because I`m genuinely having fun,` you know?”

Newell’s remarkable journey began in the early 1980s when he left Harvard to join Microsoft. He later departed Microsoft as a millionaire alongside Mike Harrington, to co-found Valve. Today, he is recognized as a billionaire, with Forbes estimating his net worth at an astonishing $9.5 billion. Despite his immense wealth, Newell remains remarkably accessible to his fanbase, notably demonstrated by his personal delivery of Steam Decks to customers in 2022.
