Fortnite OG: Classic Matchmaking Returns Without SBMM or Bots

While Fortnite OG has successfully maintained a robust and consistent player population for many months, its spotlight has recently been somewhat dimmed by newer modes like Reload and Blitz. In response, Epic Games is taking proactive steps to inject fresh excitement into the experience. A recent live rocket event appears to have set these changes in motion, potentially guiding the island towards an uncharted future with the enigmatic appearance of red rifts. Concurrently, a new patch has been deployed, introducing a special “retro” matchmaking option for Fortnite OG that completely removes skill-based matchmaking (SBMM) and all bots.

To engage with this updated version of OG, players simply need to select the standard OG mode (making sure to avoid the Zero Build variant). A new “Duo (Expert)” option will then be visible at the bottom of the group-size dropdown menu. For those who prefer the existing system, the traditional Duo mode remains fully accessible, allowing players to opt out of this more intensely competitive environment, often dubbed a “sweatfest.”

The decision to remove skill-based matchmaking (SBMM) is likely to be met with considerable enthusiasm by a segment of the player base. However, a significant consequence of this alteration is that novice Fortnite players may now frequently encounter highly experienced professional gamers. This outcome is precisely why professional players often advocate for the dismantling of SBMM. Conversely, this dynamic typically offers a less enjoyable experience for average players, who generally find more satisfaction in matches against opponents of a comparable skill level, rather than consistently facing significantly superior competitors.

Within the context of Fortnite OG, the deliberate exclusion of both SBMM and bots primarily serves as a deeply nostalgic gesture. Neither of these features was part of the game during its inaugural Chapter 1. Therefore, this strategic adjustment to the matchmaking system serves to align the current OG mode more authentically with the mechanics and overall feel of the game as it was in its early days.
