Final Fantasy XIV Director Addresses Mod Controversy After Review Bombing

The second iteration of Final Fantasy 14, launched in 2013, has proven significantly more successful than its 2010 predecessor. Recently, however, discontent has flared within the FF14 community following the removal of a popular mod, leading to a wave of negative “review-bombing” on Steam. In response, director Naoki Yoshida has addressed the player base regarding the controversy.

Yoshida`s comprehensive statement was posted on FF14`s official website, with a request that media outlets not use excerpts. Nevertheless, given its nearly 2,000-word length, a concise summary is essential. The issue began when Square Enix`s legal team contacted modder DarkArchon about Mare Synchronos, a mod that allowed players` custom avatars to be visible to others outside their individual game. Following Square Enix`s demand for its removal, some fans retaliated by leaving negative reviews on Steam.

While Yoshida acknowledges his tolerance for mods and admiration for certain fan-made creations, he firmly opposes modifications that negatively violate the game`s intended design or spirit. As an illustration, Yoshida noted that Square Enix could face legal repercussions in some regions due to mods displaying nude characters. He also cited custom appearances that replicate paid in-game content as an example of devaluing the services and collectibles sold by Square Enix, which are crucial for the game`s financial sustainability.

Concluding his statement, Yoshida affirmed his respect for the PC gaming modding tradition but urged players to engage in modding while upholding FF14`s rules and integrity.

Late last year, Square Enix expanded Final Fantasy 14 to mobile platforms and released its fifth expansion, Dawntrail. More recently, Yoshida expressed his commitment to maintaining Final Fantasy 14`s compatibility with PlayStation 4 for as long as feasible. However, he acknowledged that the hardware limitations of the PS4 might increasingly challenge this goal going forward.
