Dragon Quest 1+2 HD-2D Remake: Easier Questing with New Scrolls and Sigils

Square Enix has unveiled further details about the Dragon Quest 1+2 HD-2D Remake, scheduled for release in October. The new information highlights combat improvements and the introduction of new items for players. True to the classic JRPG style, adventurers will navigate expansive overworlds and challenging dungeons, engaging in the series` signature turn-based monster battles.

The core Dragon Quest mechanics, including spells and skills, remain intact. However, a new optional assistance feature has been added: if players find themselves struggling, the game can suggest optimal moves to capitalize on enemy weaknesses. This setting, accessible via the game menu, will display on-screen hints indicating effective actions against foes when activated.

The remake also introduces Scrolls, new items that enable characters to acquire extra spells and abilities. Found in treasure chests across both games, these scrolls are character-specific. Additionally, the five iconic sigils from Dragon Quest 2 – Sun, Star, Moon, Water, and Soul – make their return. Collecting these sigils will unlock diverse battle effects, empowering players in combat.

In Dragon Quest 1 HD, players will earn sigils by undertaking a quest to aid the fairies. For Dragon Quest 2 HD, sigils are gathered during the grand mission to vanquish Hargon, the malevolent high priest commanding a monster legion. Each sigil grants distinct advantages, such as assured critical hits for certain special abilities, and can enhance other skills under specific prerequisites.

The Dragon Quest 1+2 HD-2D Remake is set to release on October 30, available on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and the upcoming Switch 2. A key detail for Nintendo players is the absence of an upgrade path between different Switch console versions.

“The games brilliantly merge classic pixel art with contemporary enhancements. I was truly impressed by the evolution of Square Enix`s `HD-2D` aesthetic in recent years. The vibrant color palette and saturation evoke the charm of 8-bit classics, making the exquisite sprite artwork truly stand out.”
