At QuakeCon 2025, Id Software unveiled significant updates for both Doom Eternal and Doom: The Dark Ages. Both titles received new features designed to offer players greater control and customization over their intense gameplay experiences.
Doom Eternal: Official Mod Support Goes Live
For the 2020 hit, Doom Eternal, full mod support — previously in beta — has now been officially released for all Steam users. Id Software confirmed plans to expand this feature to other PC platforms in the coming weeks.
The introduction of official mod support has led to a revamped main menu. Players can now choose to start new save games with or without mods. An intuitive in-game mod interface allows users to easily browse, download, and manage the load order of their selected modifications. Id Software reports that over 700 mods are already available for players to explore.
Doom: The Dark Ages: The Ripatorium and Campaign Enhancements
Doom: The Dark Ages, the latest installment in the iconic franchise released in May, also received a substantial update. A new wave-based arena mode, dubbed the “Ripatorium,” has been introduced. This mode provides players with granular control over various parameters, including time limits, background music, enemy types, and the number of waves. Successfully completing Ripatorium arenas will reward players with an exclusive new Doom Slayer skin.

Beyond the Ripatorium, significant adjustments have been made to Doom: The Dark Ages` single-player campaign. Developers have improved weapon swap speeds and blocking mechanics. Players now have the ability to adjust the slow-motion duration during melee attacks and parries, offering more control over combat flow. Additional changes include weapon balance tweaks, refined campaign music to better sync with combat encounters, and improvements to the dragon and Atlan mech segments for a smoother and more immersive experience.
Previously, Id Software had already intensified the challenge of Doom: The Dark Ages` Nightmare difficulty, and a prior update incorporated path tracing to further boost the game`s visual fidelity.
Game Review Insight for Doom: The Dark Ages
A notable review highlighted that Doom: The Dark Ages `redefines the rules of engagement` and is `a finely-tuned adventure that delivers the power fantasy of ripping and tearing through thousands of demons.` However, the review also noted a perceived lack of depth in the game`s dragon and mech levels.
