Diablo 4 is poised for its official launch in China, having recently received the necessary government approval from the National Press and Publication Administration.
According to reports, Diablo 4 was among a select group of only seven foreign games greenlit by the Chinese regulatory body in July, alongside 127 domestically produced titles. This approval brings the total number of foreign games cleared for release in China this year to 62.
The recent approval of foreign games has increased, now occurring monthly. This contrasts with a period between July 2021 and March 2022 when no new games were approved. Last month saw a record 158 new game approvals, a multi-year high, as reported by Chinese news outlet Yicai Global.
This development marks a significant victory for Blizzard. The company recently re-established its partnership with Chinese gaming titan NetEase in 2024 to relaunch games like World of Warcraft and Overwatch 2. This followed a period in 2023 and early 2024 when licensing disputes led to many Blizzard titles, including WoW, being unavailable in China. Diablo 4 had its global launch in June 2023, while these games were offline in China.
While Blizzard and NetEase have not yet disclosed an official release date for Diablo 4 in China, the localized version is expected to feature several modifications compared to the global release. Historically, Blizzard games in China have utilized distinct, region-locked clients and servers, often including exclusive in-game events and cosmetic items.
To comply with Chinese government regulations, content in the Chinese versions of Blizzard games frequently undergoes alterations. For Diablo 4, this will likely involve reduced gore, fewer skeletal representations, and the omission of specific religious allusions. It`s almost certain that the Necromancer class and its skeletal minions will have a different appearance in the Chinese release of Diablo 4.
In other Diablo 4 news, Blizzard appears ready to introduce substantial changes to its leading Action RPG, with content creators recently previewing upcoming game developments. Meanwhile, Season 9 of Diablo 4 is currently active, and a new expansion is scheduled for release next year.
