The legendary James Bond is making a return to the gaming world in 007: First Light, an upcoming title from the critically acclaimed Danish developer, IO Interactive, known for the Hitman franchise. Acquiring the rights to such a prominent series was a significant challenge, and the studio reportedly used inventive tactics, essentially crafting a “super-spy Frankenstein” by combining elements of Agent 47 with Daniel Craig`s likeness.
Speaking to IGN, Hakan Abrak, CEO of IO Interactive and Game Director for First Light, revealed that their pitch included a distinctive in-game demo. This demonstration effectively blended key aspects of their Hitman games with the quintessential spirit of James Bond.
Abrak confirmed, “We did indeed integrate Daniel Craig into the demo.” He elaborated that they simply modeled Craig`s head and substituted it for Agent 47`s, purely for demonstration purposes. This allowed them to convey the immersive, dynamic environments characteristic of an IO Interactive game. The particular demo was set in Sapienza, a familiar Hitman location, specifically within the secret virus lab situated below the picturesque coastal settlement.
With Daniel Craig having concluded his tenure as Bond in 2021`s No Time To Die, selecting the next actor for James Bond marked another crucial development for 007: First Light. Irish actor Patrick Gibson has been cast in the role, depicting a younger, less experienced iteration of the MI6 operative. At 30 years old himself, and portraying Bond at the age of 26, Gibson becomes the youngest actor ever to embody the iconic spy.
Narrative director Martin Emborg clarified the casting approach: “Our process wasn`t primarily about seeking out a prominent celebrity for the role. It was more focused on discovering an actor capable of portraying this nascent version of the character.” He added, “Collaborating with big names presents a different kind of challenge, and the idea of simply thinking, `Wouldn`t it be great if [famous actor] played Bond?` never truly appealed to us.”
This isn`t the inaugural instance where Daniel Craig`s image has served as a link between the cinematic and video game interpretations of James Bond. For example, in the 2010 GoldenEye remake for the Nintendo GameCube, Craig`s facial features were utilized to modernize the aesthetic of the 1997 Nintendo 64 original, replacing Pierce Brosnan`s portrayal of the spy.
007: First Light is slated for release on March 27, 2026. Pre-orders are currently open, offering a deluxe edition that notably includes a unique golden gun.
