Cute Climbing Game Peak’s Latest “Totally Normal Update” Adds In Totally Not Normal Cannibalism

Peak, a game centered around climbing immense mountains to be rescued from a crash-landing on an uninhabited island, generally presents itself as quite charming. However, a recent update was released, and its patch notes, under the `Features` section, literally stated: `added cannibalism.` Developers Aggro Crab and Landfall playfully described it as `a totally normal update. Nothing to see here.`

This update arrived despite Aggro Crab previously stating that cannibalism couldn`t be implemented in Peak. But, as the saying goes, the customer is always right. Fortunately, this new feature doesn`t force you to dismember your friends` cute avatars in a Hannibal Lecter-esque fashion. Instead, when your character is too hungry, your friends` avatars begin to resemble a walking rotisserie chicken. If you successfully consume them, they transform into skeletons (and, unsurprisingly, die).

Thankfully, cannibalism wasn`t the sole addition. The options menu now includes several new features, such as the ability to adjust your field of view while climbing and a `push-to-mute` setting (`No more having to listen to your streamer friend talk to chat`). There have also been significant bug fixes, including a temporary solution for a bug causing substantial fall damage from short distances, and `greatly improved` performance.

Full Patch Notes (Patch 1.10.a):

Features:

  • Added cannibalism.

Options:

  • Polish and Turkish translations are now available.
  • New Setting: `Climbing Extra Field Of View`. This allows you to adjust how the FOV changes during climbs.
  • New Setting: PUSH-TO-MUTE. This functions as the opposite of `Push-To-Talk.` No more listening to your streamer friend conversing with their chat.
  • Settings previously hidden outside the Main Menu will now appear but be disabled. Hopefully, this reduces confusion.

Balance Changes:

  • Fixed an issue where Trail Mix, Granola Bar, Medicinal Root, and Airline Food did not provide extra hunger reduction after being cooked.
  • Fixed an issue where well-done cooked items would lose their buffs when stashed. For clarity, well-done items are intended to provide the same bonus as simply cooked items. It`s your warning before it burns 🙂
  • Remedy Fungus now also cures poison in addition to injuries, which seems logical.

Major Fixes:

  • We have a temporary solution for the FALL DAMAGE BUG, where players took significant damage from short falls, often due to spamming climb and lunge buttons. A more comprehensive improvement will arrive in a later patch. Please let us know if you still observe any strange fall damage behavior!
    • NOTE: It appears this only addressed the issue when sliding down while holding a wall, but not when on a slope. Apologies, folks, we`ll continue our investigation.
  • THE NAPBERRY PLANT IS TEMPORARILY DISABLED. Some players experienced lag and crashes due to our implementation of the Napberry Plant. Trust me, it`s a peculiar issue. While we work on a better implementation ASAP, the Napberry Plant will not appear in levels.
  • Performance at THE PEAK has been greatly improved. Those pesky wildflowers were the culprit.
  • Fixed an issue where an item could get stuck in your `Hands` Item Slot. This occurs when the server cannot keep up with rapidly swapped items, so a small delay has been added after swapping items before you can pick up a new one.

Minor Fixes:

  • You can no longer obtain the Bookworm Badge by simply reading the final page without the others.
  • Fixed an issue where reading guidebook pages out of order could lead to inconsistent stat tracking for the Bookworm Badge.
  • Removed a non-spatialized sound effect that played when players landed from a fall.
  • Fixed an issue where Ticks were incorrectly counted as berries for the Foraging Badge, lol.
  • Fixed an issue where an item in the temporary slot displayed the wrong cooked amount.
  • Fixed an issue where eating a Scorchberry did not contribute to the Forager Badge.
  • Fixed an issue where acquiring an Anti-Rope Cannon did not grant the Esoterica Badge.
  • You can no longer earn progress achievements (such as Beachcomber Badge) while in ghost form. Reaching a new area while alive should grant you achievements for all completed areas in that run.
