Cloud Imperium Games Confirms Star Citizen Fan Data Breach Weeks After Attack

Cloud Imperium Games (CIG), the studio behind the ambitious space simulation game Star Citizen, has recently acknowledged a sophisticated cyberattack that resulted in a data breach affecting some user accounts.

The incident, described by developers as a “systematic and sophisticated” hack, occurred in late January. However, CIG only publicly disclosed the issue recently, nearly two months after it took place.

According to the company, the breach involved “limited access to personal user data.” Despite the security compromise, Cloud Imperium Games asserts that the incident does not pose a significant threat to user safety.

The developers stated:

The affected data pertains only to basic account information (i.e., metadata, contact details, username, date of birth, and name). Financial or payment information was not stored in the compromised systems and was not accessed. Passwords were not affected, and access was exclusively ‘read-only.’ No data injections or modifications occurred.

Cloud Imperium Games continues to monitor the situation and is implementing measures to prevent similar incidents from happening again in the future.
