Mike Ybarra, the former president of Blizzard, continues to share his perspectives on various industry topics through social media. Recently, he offered his thoughts on “insider” rumors suggesting that PlayStation’s exclusive titles will cease to be released on PC, with future PC releases possibly limited to live-service games only.
Ybarra expressed a degree of support for this potential strategic shift by Sony, noting:
“It’s regrettable if true, but such a move largely makes sense. They likely see Xbox’s current situation as a cautionary tale, a ‘final nail in the coffin’ (though I hope for an improvement in Xbox’s fortunes).”
According to Ybarra, Sony’s focus for competition has shifted, with the company now viewing Valve as its primary rival. He elaborated on this perspective:
“Crucially, Sony is increasingly perceiving Valve as a significant new competitor. Valve is poised to enter the living room and the broader console market with its Steam Machine and, presumably, various third-party devices running SteamOS. Valve has a strong track record of rarely making missteps, and Sony appears to recognize this. Ultimately, the development and release of high-quality exclusive games remain paramount – that much is clear.”
