For many fans, Christopher Reeve`s portrayal remains the definitive Superman. Now, enthusiasts can revisit his iconic performance across four films with an exclusive 5-Film Steelbook Library Case Box Set, set to be released on Amazon on September 2.
Pre-orders were not yet open as of July 18, but are anticipated to begin soon. Interested buyers should regularly check the Amazon product page, as this exclusive collection is expected to sell out quickly.
This new set appears to be an updated version of the earlier 85th Anniversary Superman 5-Film Collection steelbook. While the previous edition offered additional physical extras, this release focuses solely on the films and steelbook cases, which should contribute to a more accessible price point. The collection features each film in 4K, along with standard Blu-ray and Movies Anywhere digital copies, housed within four individual steelbook cases, all presented in a collector`s tin. The included films are:
- Superman (1978)
- Superman 2
- Superman 2: The Richard Donner Cut
- Superman 3
- Superman 4: The Quest for Peace
This Superman collection is part of a growing trend of Amazon-exclusive steelbook sets. Recent examples include the 007: Sean Connery 6-Film Steelbook Collection launched in June, and the A Nightmare on Elm Street 7-Film Steelbook Collection revealed earlier this month.
Notably, this collection includes two versions of Superman II. This stems from production disagreements and budget issues that led to director Richard Donner`s replacement by Richard Lester during the original production. Decades later, Donner`s cut was released, and it is widely regarded as the superior version, offering greater depth and storytelling.
Beyond the five films presented in native 4K resolution with HDR10 and various audio formats (Dolby Atmos, TrueHD 7.1, Master Audio 2.0), this 10-disc collection is packed with bonus features. These supplementary materials, including documentaries, commentaries, and TV specials, are located on the 1080p Blu-ray discs for each film. A complete list of these features can be found below.
A standard edition of the Superman 5-Film Collection is also available for $75. While it does not include the premium steelbook cases or collector`s tin, it still provides the same films in both 4K and 1080p, along with all the special features.
Finding these individual Superman films on 4K Blu-ray can be challenging; currently, only Superman `78 is readily available on Amazon for $15 (originally $34).
This collection pairs well with the upcoming Superman movie, also available for preorder. The new film not only honors the character`s legacy but also offers a steelbook edition that complements the Reeve collection`s aesthetic. Although the steelbook edition is currently sold out, restocks are anticipated before its official launch.
