Catch These Samurai Films That Inspired Ghost of Yotei in Theaters

Developers at Sucker Punch have consistently stated that the Ghost of Tsushima series, including its upcoming sequel Ghost of Yotei, draws heavily from Japanese samurai cinema. Ahead of Ghost of Yotei`s fall release, Sucker Punch is partnering with Alamo Drafthouse for special screenings of a curated selection of films that served as inspiration for the game.

Sucker Punch announced on their social media channels the five films that will be featured in the screening series:

  • “The Tale of Zatoichi” by Kenji Misumi
  • Takashi Miike`s remake of “13 Assassins”
  • “Lady Snowblood” by Toshiya Fujita
  • Akira Kurosawa`s legendary “Ran”
  • “Lone Wolf and Cub: Sword of Vengeance”, also by Kenji Misumi

These screenings are scheduled to take place at select Alamo Drafthouse locations between August 2 and September 4.

During the development of Ghost of Tsushima, Sucker Punch collaborated with Kurosawa`s estate to implement a black-and-white “Kurosawa mode.” This popular feature will return in Ghost of Yotei. The new game will also include a mode created in partnership with Takashi Miike, focusing on intimate and personal kill animations. Furthermore, Shinichirō Watanabe, director of Samurai Champloo, contributed his own mode, adding original lo-fi tracks to Ghost of Yotei`s soundtrack.

Earlier this month, Sucker Punch revealed that Atsu, the protagonist of Ghost of Yotei, will not be confined to traditional samurai or shinobi weaponry. Instead, Atsu will be able to wield a diverse arsenal of weapons at will.

Sony has also unveiled two limited-edition Ghost of Yotei PS5 bundles, set to be released concurrently with the game on October 2.
