A live-action adaptation of Call of Duty is currently in development at Paramount. While the project is still in its nascent stages, Activision is actively engaging with fans to gather their preferences for the film`s source material.
A recent survey, distributed to members of the community feedback program Recon Squad, invites fans to rank their preferred inspirations for the movie. Options include established game series such as Black Ops, Modern Warfare, the popular Zombies mode, or other storylines distinct from Black Ops and Modern Warfare. Furthermore, Activision is curious if fans would instead prefer a wholly original Call of Duty narrative to serve as the film`s foundation.
This survey was initially brought to light by Detonated.
While the final movie will not be solely dictated by fan feedback, both Activision and Paramount are clearly keen on incorporating community insights into the development process.
Ellison`s Vision for the Franchise
During the Call of Duty movie announcement, Paramount head David Ellison expressed his deep admiration for the franchise. He highlighted a range of titles, from the original World War II games to more recent entries like Black Ops and Modern Warfare, as personal favorites. Ellison stated:
“We`re approaching this film with the same disciplined, uncompromising commitment to excellence that guided our work on Top Gun: Maverick, ensuring it meets the exceptionally high standards this franchise and its fans deserve. I can promise that we are resolute in our mission to deliver a cinematic experience that honors the legacy of this one-in-a-million brand–thrilling longtime fans of Call of Duty while captivating a whole new generation.”
A Long History of Movie Ambitions
Activision`s pursuit of a Call of Duty film has a long history, spanning several years. In 2015, the company established Activision Blizzard Studios with ambitions to create an entire cinematic universe around Call of Duty. At the time, there were discussions about a multi-year strategy for films based on sub-brands like Modern Warfare and Black Ops, though none of these projects ever materialized. Notably, Stefano Sollima (known for Sicario: Day of Soldado) was once slated to direct one of these films, with Oscar-nominated writer Scott Silver attached to pen the script.
Even legendary Hollywood director Steven Spielberg reportedly showed interest in a Call of Duty movie, but his demands were allegedly deemed unacceptable by Activision.
Upcoming Game Release
Meanwhile, the next installment in the game series, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, is set to launch in November, with a multiplayer beta scheduled for early October.
