For the first time ever, Activision is set to release new installments of the Call of Duty: Black Ops series in consecutive years. This unprecedented move sees Treyarch and Raven Software, the primary developers behind Black Ops 6, also co-leading the production of Black Ops 7.
This rapid release schedule has raised questions, as Activision traditionally emphasizes a three-year development cycle for each new Call of Duty title. However, Miles Leslie, Treyarch`s associate creative director, clarified to IGN that the development of Black Ops 7 actually commenced simultaneously with Black Ops 6. Notably, Black Ops 6 itself had an extended four-year production period, the longest in the franchise`s history.
Leslie stated, “They were initiated simultaneously.” He explained that while their production timelines naturally differed, both titles were greenlit and developed in parallel. This presented a unique yet enjoyable challenge: to transition from Black Ops 6`s 1991 rogue team setting to Black Ops 7`s futuristic 2035.
While Treyarch and Raven Software lead the charge, a vast network of Activision studios is contributing to Black Ops 7`s creation. For instance, Beenox is specifically handling the PC version. Other contributing studios include Activision Shanghai, Demonware, Digital Legends, High Moon Studios, Infinity Ward, Sledgehammer Games, Activision Central Design, Activision Central Technology, and Activision QA.
Natalie Pohorski, the lead narrative producer, highlighted that developing the games concurrently allows for synergistic “payoffs” that would otherwise be unattainable. She noted, “Many innovations introduced in Black Ops 6 will carry over to Black Ops 7, creating a strong link between the two titles.”
Among these shared innovations is the Omnimovement system, which is being expanded in Black Ops 7 to include enhanced abilities such as wall-running. Furthermore, Black Ops 7 introduces new traversal tools like wingsuits and grappling hooks, promising fresh gameplay dynamics.
Black Ops 7 is scheduled for launch on November 14, and will be available across PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC. Additionally, it will be available on Xbox Game Pass from its release day, offering broad accessibility to players.
