Activision`s long-standing tradition of releasing a new Call of Duty title annually continues in 2025 with Call of Duty: Black Ops 7. This latest installment was officially unveiled during the Xbox Games Showcase and received further details at Gamescom 2025. This particular release is significant as it marks the first time two Black Ops games are launched in consecutive years. The development is once again being spearheaded by Raven Software and Treyarch, the same studios behind 2024`s Black Ops 6.
What is Call of Duty 2025?
The upcoming Call of Duty title for 2025 is indeed Call of Duty: Black Ops 7. Set in the year 2035, this game serves as a direct narrative continuation of both Black Ops 6 (which took place in the 1990s) and Black Ops 2 (set in 2025). An initial cinematic announcement trailer provided the first glimpse into its world.
Enhanced Movement and Progression
Black Ops 7 will retain Treyarch`s “omnimovement” system across all game modes, introducing new mechanics such as wall-running and wall-jumping. A new 20v20 Skirmish mode will feature expansive maps and introduce fresh abilities like wingsuits and grappling hooks. The “Carry Forward” program also returns, meaning weapons and operators acquired in Black Ops 6 will transfer over to Black Ops 7, allowing players to retain their progress.
Release Date Confirmed
Activision has set the release date for Black Ops 7 for November 14. This year, the game benefits from the delay of Grand Theft Auto 6 to May 2026, avoiding a direct sales conflict. However, it will launch roughly a month after EA`s highly anticipated Battlefield 6, which is scheduled for October 10.
Multiplayer Beta Details
Prior to its full release, Black Ops 7 will host a multiplayer beta. Early access will commence in October for selected Game Pass subscribers and those who preordered the game. The beta will then open to all players on October 5, concluding on October 8, offering a chance to try the game ahead of launch.
Preorder Information
Black Ops 7 is now available for preorder. Contrary to some speculation, the game`s price will not be $80. Additionally, in line with Microsoft`s strategy, it will be available on Xbox Game Pass from day one for subscribers.
Trailers
The initial reveal trailer for Black Ops 7 debuted at the Xbox Games Showcase. This cinematic trailer offered hints about the futuristic narrative and suggested the return of familiar Black Ops characters, featuring the series` characteristic plot twists. Another trailer, also quite mind-bending, premiered at Gamescom. Furthermore, a detailed 17-minute “Direct” broadcast was made available, showcasing more details about the game.
Available Platforms
Activision has confirmed Black Ops 7 will be released on current-gen consoles (Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5) and PC, as well as previous-gen consoles (Xbox One, PlayStation 4). While Microsoft aims to bring Call of Duty to Nintendo platforms, specific titles for Switch or Switch 2 have not yet been announced.
Game Pass Availability
Following the precedent set by Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, Black Ops 7 will be accessible on Xbox Game Pass for both Xbox and PC users from its launch day, providing immediate access to subscribers.
Story, Setting, and Key Characters
True to the Black Ops legacy, the game`s narrative promises a complex tale filled with political intrigue and unexpected turns, aiming to be “the most mind-bending Black Ops ever” and the “evolution of Black Ops.” The story unfolds in 2035, over four decades after Black Ops 6 and a decade after Black Ops 2. It depicts a world on the verge of collapse, scarred by intense conflict and psychological warfare. Player character David Mason, alongside his team, must confront a formidable adversary who strategically employs fear as a weapon.
Featured Celebrity Cast
Activision continues its tradition of collaborating with well-known personalities for Call of Duty. Milo Ventimiglia (known from Gilmore Girls) lends his voice to David Mason, while Kiernan Shipka (from Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) plays Emma Kagan. Michael Rooker (from Guardians of the Galaxy) reprises his role as Mike Harper, a character he also portrayed in Black Ops 2.
