In a significant shift from previous Call of Duty titles, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7`s campaign will not allow players to choose a difficulty level. Associate creative director Miles Leslie explained that the game`s difficulty is “baked in” to its core design, rather than being an option for players to adjust.
This innovative approach is primarily driven by the campaign`s fundamental integration of co-operative gameplay, a key feature for Black Ops 7.
Leslie clarified that the campaign is meticulously crafted to support both solo players and squads of up to four. He stressed that the “baked-in” difficulty is essential for managing the dynamics of a co-op campaign, ensuring that missions remain well-balanced and enjoyable for individual players, even when playing alone.
Addressing the solo player community, Leslie offered reassurance, stating, “We`re not forgetting about you; we love you.” However, he reiterated that the Black Ops 7 campaign was fundamentally envisioned as a “social experience.” The overarching goal, he added, is to deliver an engaging and appropriately challenging journey for teams of two, three, or four players.
A New Paradigm for Campaign Challenge
Historically, Call of Duty games have provided a range of difficulty settings, including Recruit, Regular, Hardened, and Veteran, alongside the exceptionally demanding Realism mode. For Black Ops 7, the campaign`s difficulty will now dynamically scale based on the number of players in co-op. This means that grouping up with friends won`t inherently make the game easier; instead, successful mission completion will critically depend on effective teamwork and strategic coordination.
Unified Progression and Replayable Endings
Further innovations in Black Ops 7`s campaign include a unified XP progression system that connects the campaign`s experience points directly to multiplayer, Zombies, and Warzone. The campaign`s narrative culminates in a mission titled “Avalon Endgame,” which is described as a novel, replayable experience. In this mission, players and their squads will be tasked with surviving overwhelming odds, adapting under immense pressure, and ultimately challenging conventional notions of what a Black Ops campaign can deliver.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 is scheduled for release on November 14, with a multiplayer beta set to take place in October. The game will be available across multiple platforms, including PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox, and PC. Notably, it will also be accessible through Xbox Game Pass.
