Gearbox Software has unveiled a new character spotlight for the highly anticipated looter-shooter, Borderlands 4. Titled “Yolt,” this video introduces Rafa the Exo-Soldier at a pivotal moment, just before he definitively breaks ties with the morally questionable Tediore Corporation. The short also offers a preview of his distinct abilities, including the devastating Arc-knives—powerful energy-based blades deployed directly from Rafa`s exosuit.
The video begins by showcasing Rafa proudly donning his new exoskeleton during a live Tediore Corp. presentation. However, the situation quickly deteriorates as his commanding officer elaborates on the suit`s more unsettling functionalities—such as its capacity to remain operational even after its wearer`s demise—and the company`s aggressive cost-cutting initiatives. The ensuing chaos is depicted with a signature Borderlands blend of humor and violence; Rafa rapidly transforms from a disciplined soldier to a furious combatant, obliterating enemies within seconds.
A striking element of Rafa`s character short is its notably darker thematic undertone. While it retains the series` characteristic comedic and over-the-top elements, there`s a discernible seriousness to the concepts being explored. This suggests that Borderlands 4 might not only deliver the expected humor and action upon its release but also feature a more profound and engaging character-driven narrative.
Borderlands 4 is scheduled to launch on September 12 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The Nintendo Switch 2 version is set to follow later, on October 3, 2025.
