Randy Pitchford, CEO of Gearbox Software, forecasts that Borderlands 4 will elevate the franchise`s overall sales to an impressive 100 million units. In an interview, Pitchford confidently stated, “We will easily surpass 100 million units with this launch, across the entire franchise.”
This prediction isn`t overly ambitious, given that the series has already sold over 94 million units. Pitchford is essentially anticipating at least 6 million sales for Borderlands 4. For context, Borderlands 3 alone sold over 23 million copies, becoming 2K`s fastest-selling game. Borderlands 2 remains 2K`s highest-selling title of all time, with over 30 million units sold.
Achieving 100 million sales is a rare feat in the video game industry. Should Borderlands 4 propel the franchise to this benchmark, it would join an elite group including Grand Theft Auto, Red Dead, Pokémon, Call of Duty, Minecraft, Final Fantasy, and Assassin`s Creed.
From Skepticism to Global Success
Pitchford recounted that in the early days of promoting Borderlands, he had to exert significant effort to gain any attention. He described a time when “nobody cared” about the game, and many anticipated its failure.
Before the Borderlands debut in 2009, Gearbox was primarily recognized for its World War II FPS series, Brothers in Arms, and various Half-Life expansion packs. The launch of Borderlands marked a massive success, establishing the franchise as a lasting powerhouse.
“We transitioned from an industry that foretold our demise – believing Borderlands would attract no audience – to becoming one of the world`s leading video game franchises. Frankly, it`s quite humbling to be a part of this journey,” Pitchford shared.
Borderlands 4 Release and Pricing
Borderlands 4 is set to release on September 12 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, with a Nintendo Switch 2 version following in October. The game`s $70 price tag has sparked considerable online debate. However, Pitchford asserts that Borderlands 4 offers such immense value it would be justified even if priced at $350.
