The highly anticipated release date for Borderlands 4 on the Nintendo Switch 2 has been officially unveiled, arriving much sooner than many fans had previously anticipated. While the game is slated to debut on September 12 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford confirmed via a social media announcement that the Switch 2 version will follow swiftly, launching on October 3.
Before this revelation, there was considerable speculation and even apprehension that the Switch 2 iteration of Borderlands 4 might experience a significant delay, potentially not appearing until late 2025 or even 2026. These concerns have now been dispelled, though Gearbox and 2K Games had consistently maintained that the Switch 2 version would not launch concurrently with its counterparts on other platforms.
Further insights emerged from a Nintendo “Creator`s Voice” segment dedicated to Borderlands 4, which confirmed that the Switch 2 version was developed entirely in-house by Gearbox, eschewing any outsourcing to an external studio.
Pitchford expressed his profound enthusiasm for the Switch 2 as the ideal platform for Borderlands 4. He stated, “When you experience Borderlands 4 on Nintendo Switch 2, the cooperative gameplay and the platform`s innate ability to effortlessly connect and share with friends will make you realize just how perfectly suited this system is for Borderlands 4.”
While acknowledging that the Switch 2 might not possess the identical raw processing power as the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S, Pitchford nonetheless characterized the new console as “very powerful” and “an incredible machine in a very tight form factor.” Despite these assurances, the precise differences in performance or graphical fidelity between the various versions of Borderlands 4 across platforms remain to be fully observed.
Reflecting on the development process on the Switch 2, Pitchford shared a distinctly positive perspective: “We don`t perceive ourselves as struggling against the system. Instead, we feel the system empowers us, allowing us to craft the optimal version of Borderlands 4 possible.”
The standard edition of Borderlands 4 is priced at $70 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. In addition, Gearbox will be offering several premium editions, with prices extending up to $150, for those seeking enhanced content or collector`s items.
