Borderlands 4 is set to include over 200 unique Marcus bobblehead collectibles, which will be strategically hidden in some of the most challenging-to-access locations within the game world. These collectibles are not merely decorative but are intended to push players to fully utilize the game`s enhanced traversal mechanics, which now include gliding, double-jumping, and a versatile grapple hook.
Randy Pitchford, head of Gearbox, explained that the concept for these hidden treasures originated from Creative Director Graeme Timmons and his development team. They sought an iconic, easily recognizable item that would serve as a compelling reward for players who ventured into remote or uninhabited areas. The Marcus bobbleheads were chosen as they perfectly fit the criteria of being simple, collectible, and deeply rooted in the Borderlands universe, with an in-game lore justification for their presence on the isolationist planet of Kairos.
Pitchford highlighted the sheer volume of these elusive items, noting that he anticipates only a very small fraction of players will manage to discover them all. He emphasized that “Each has a story,” suggesting a deeper narrative significance behind their existence. He even issued a playful challenge to players, indicating that a map showing their general locations would be available.
As Borderlands 4 nears its September 12 launch, Gearbox continues to unveil more details about the game. Recent demonstrations have showcased the new Siren character, Vex, and her intriguing abilities. Furthermore, the game promises several quality-of-life improvements to the looter-shooter experience, notably including a highly anticipated volume slider specifically for the character Claptrap.
