Following the immense success of Black Myth: Wukong, which garnered significant attention and sales in 2024, developer Game Science has officially announced its next major project: Black Myth: Zhong Kui. This new title was revealed with an engaging teaser trailer during Gamescom Opening Night Live, captivating audiences with its intriguing premise.
Described as a single-player action role-playing game, Black Myth: Zhong Kui draws its core creative inspiration from the famed Chinese mythological figure, Zhong Kui. This narrative choice signifies a distinct departure from the monkey king protagonist featured in their previous hit, promising a fresh gameplay and story experience.
Currently, the game is in its nascent stages of development. Game Science has confirmed that only a cinematic trailer was showcased at Gamescom, with no in-game footage yet available for public viewing. The studio has ambitious plans for its release, targeting PC and all major console platforms to ensure wide accessibility for players.
In a recent developer FAQ, Game Science underscored the very early phase of production, noting that the game`s full design outline is still a work in progress. However, the team explicitly confirmed a key difference from its predecessor, stating that players “won`t be playing a monkey role this time.” The studio is dedicated to exploring and experimenting with the specific gameplay and thematic distinctions that will set Zhong Kui apart from Wukong.
The developers playfully encouraged patience from fans, stating, “So take it easy–let us impress ourselves first before we serve it to you.” This sentiment highlights their commitment to delivering a polished and compelling experience.
The original Black Myth: Wukong made its debut on PlayStation 5 and PC in August 2024, with an Xbox release following shortly thereafter. The game has achieved remarkable commercial success, selling over 25 million copies globally, and an expansion for the title is already in active development.
Despite its widespread acclaim, the Black Myth series has not been without its share of controversies. Game Science`s guidelines for content creators reportedly included directives to avoid discussions related to `feminist propaganda` and COVID-19. Furthermore, a 2023 report by IGN brought to light allegations of sexist and misogynistic commentary attributed to members of the development team, sparking considerable debate within the gaming community.
