Recent reports confirm a significant shake-up at Cloud Chamber, the studio behind the highly anticipated BioShock 4. This comes after the game reportedly failed an internal review by 2K Games. If the initial assessment had been more positive, the game could have potentially launched as early as next year.
According to Bloomberg, BioShock 4 was originally targeting a release window in late 2026 or early 2027. However, subsequent layoffs at Cloud Chamber, which saw 80 of the studio`s approximately 250 employees depart, are now expected to further prolong the game`s development and delay its release.
Following the critical internal review, studio head Kelley Gilmore was removed from her position at Cloud Chamber. 2K Games has since appointed Rod Fergusson to lead the studio. Fergusson joins from Blizzard, where he previously spearheaded the Diablo franchise, and brings valuable experience, having also contributed to getting BioShock Infinite`s production back on track.
Initial insights into the project`s issues suggested dissatisfaction with the game`s narrative direction. In an internal memo, 2K Games President David Ismailer addressed the situation, stating, “While we`re excited about the foundational gameplay elements of the project, we`ve made the decision with studio leadership to rework certain aspects that are core to a BioShock game.”
Currently, there is no updated release window for BioShock 4. Separately, a live-action BioShock film is still in development at Netflix, with Francis Lawrence attached to direct and Justin Rhodes (known for Terminator: Dark Fate) having completed a new draft of the script.
