Battlefield 6: New Cross-Play System & Matchmaking Details Unveiled

Battlefield 6, officially unveiled recently, introduces significant changes, notably to its cross-play mechanics. The game will implement a `preferred input` matchmaking system, ensuring that console players (Xbox, PlayStation) using controllers are primarily matched with others using similar inputs. Similarly, PC players using a mouse and keyboard will be grouped together. Cross-platform play between these different input types will only be activated when necessary to populate game lobbies, aiming to minimize competitive advantages based on input method while still facilitating quick matches.

Producer Alexia Christofi explained that the game`s priority is to keep players within their chosen input community. Mixing platforms will occur only if regional player numbers are too low to ensure stable matchmaking. This approach seeks to enhance match fairness and maintain low latency and fast match creation times. Players will also have the option to fully enable or disable cross-play in the settings for greater control over their experience.

In contrast, Battlefield 2042 previously defaulted to full cross-play between consoles and PC, often leading to unbalanced matches and inconsistent gameplay. Battlefield 6 improves upon this by treating cross-play as a supplementary option rather than the primary mode.

EA is also addressing the much-debated topic of skill-based matchmaking (SBMM) in modern shooters. For Battlefield 6, EA indicates (as reported by CharlieIntel) that matchmaking will largely prioritize player ping to ensure proximity to game servers. Player skill will influence matchmaking to varying degrees, depending on the specific game mode and the number of participants. However, precise details on this system are yet to be fully disclosed.

The game is set to retain the franchise`s signature elements, including expansive battles, squad-based combat with distinct classes, intense vehicle combat, and dynamic environmental destruction.

Battlefield 6 is scheduled for release on October 10, 2025, for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC. An open beta will precede the launch, commencing on August 9.
