It`s widely known that the Xbox Series S is less powerful than its counterparts, the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5. This presented a specific challenge for EA and Battlefield Studios in bringing Battlefield 6 to Microsoft`s console. However, Christian Buhl, the technical director, noted that optimizing for the Xbox Series S was quite similar to managing various performance targets for different PC configurations.
During an interview with IGN, Buhl discussed Battlefield 6`s performance on the Xbox Series S. He stated that while they don`t provide separate “performance” and “quality” options for the Series S, the game runs very consistently at 60 frames per second at 1080p. Buhl attributed this to the Series S being a “less powerful system.”
“Honestly, the biggest challenge for us was memory,” Buhl explained. The Xbox Series S has 10GB of system memory, in contrast to the Xbox Series X`s 16GB (along with differing memory speeds). “Yes, it was a challenge, but we also develop for multiple platform targets on PC,” Buhl remarked, “so it`s not something we were unfamiliar with.” Notably, last month, Buhl informed Eurogamer that many Battlefield 6 beta players on PC used minimum system specifications.
In the past, some game developers have openly criticized the Xbox Series S, even advocating for Microsoft to remove the mandate for studios to support the system. A prominent example was Baldur`s Gate 3, which launched later on Xbox Series X|S than on PS5 due to technical hurdles with the Series S.
Meanwhile, Battlefield Studios recently revealed details about Battlefield 6`s battle royale mode, including a shrinking zone that instantly eliminates players. Single-player campaign information is anticipated to be unveiled at the Tokyo Game Show later this month. Battlefield 6 is scheduled for an October 10 release on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
